May 5th is Red Dress Day and the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit People (MMIWG2S).  The Red Dress project was created by Métis artist Jamie Black in 2010.  It is believed by many Indigenous nations that the colour red is visible to spirits. Wearing the colour red is a symbol for calling home the missing spirits.

Educators and all associated with educational institutions, are called for justice by The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. We are called to take steps to ending the human and Indigenous rights injustices that have developed from colonial violence for generations. Together we can work towards stopping violence and creating awareness for this social issue at the educational level.

School communities throughout SRPSD are raising awareness through classroom projects, school wide initiatives, and their social media pages. Today everyone is encouraged to educate yourself and others and hold space for the families, communities and victims.

Let us never forget the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit People
