On November 24th, we hosted a Love of Reading Coffee House event. Our school hallways were transformed to give our school a cozy, coffee house vibe. Our SLC baristas served coffee, hot chocolate, tea, and cookies. We enjoyed having families in our school – reading and visiting with each other. Families had the opportunity to learn more about how to support literacy at home and how we are using the science of reading in our instruction. There were drop-in sessions that modelled word mapping, Heggerty, and how to use online resources such as SPELD SA and the Florida Centre for Reading Research. We also invited families to join our school book club with plans to reconnect in January to see how it went. Finally, we encouraged families to borrow books from our library anytime! Some resources that we provided included: a list of recommended books to read at different ages, a parent bookmark with strategies about how to read with and their children, and recommendations for supporting home reading. Overall, it was a wonderful evening for our families and the staff at Wild Rose.
