Pride Month 2023 – Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division No.119

Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and these events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are also held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally and to advocate for fully inclusive society.

Earlier this year, a SRPSD Gender and Sexual Diversity (GSD) Leadership Team was created to act as an advisory group to school administrators to support best practice in inclusion of our gender and sexually diverse population. The GSD Leadership Team organized an Artistic Retreat held at the PA Wildlife Centre on April 5^th, 2023. Over 80 people (students and staff) from multiple school GSD alliances attended the retreat to create suggested renderings of SRPSD pride logos. The GSD Leadership Team shortlisted three renderings for consideration by the Board of Education. At the May 1, 2023, Board meeting, the Board approved the conceptual renderings of three submission of SRPSD Pride logos. The three logos submitted below were designed for future use.
