On September 30th, the school community of Westview had a special day. Many activities were planned to teach and honor Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Meaningful Reconciliation should engage students in learning about Canada’s history, inspire creative thinking about the future and provide students with opportunities to make a difference. With this in mind – we at Westview, had a busy day!
We started our day with yummy bannock, students and staff proudly wore their orange shirts, and in Phys. Ed. classes they played traditional games such as Nititom bowling. We read stories about survivors and participated in online presentations. Our students painted orange rocks with messages of hope, and we all paused for a moment of silence to honor those who did not make it home.
At the end of the day, we gathered together as a school family on Treaty Six Territory to recognize our past, acknowledge our present and recommit to a better future.
