2020 recipient of the Mosaic Extreme School Makeover Challenge
Congratulations to Big River Public High School on being selected as one of the 2020 recipients of the Mosaic Extreme School Makeover Challenge. The award supports the efforts of schools to provide students with healthy lifestyle choices, nutrition and healthy learning environment.
Big River Pubic High School students attend school earlier in the morning as a result of parents working. This has been a great opportunity for staff to connect with the students. This past winter, conversations lead to our school possibly providing a continental breakfast. Our staff embraced the idea and started the grant application for a breakfast cart for our students and staff. What started out as a conversation has now become a reality with the funds received from this Challenge. BRPHS will have the cart accessible each day for our students and staff. In partnership with the Co-op and President’s Choice, we will be able to offer this at no cost to our kids. The cart will have a mini-fridge, conveyor toaster, cereal dispensers, microwave, utensils, and more where students can have access to nutritional breakfast foods before heading to class or during their breaks. The remainder of the grant will go towards a vending machine that will have juice and water as well as snacks/sandwiches/subs that students can also access when school is open. To help make this project a success, our functionally integrated students will play an important role in keeping the vending machine stocked and counting the money. Students from all grades will also be expected to support keeping the program a success by running the dishes through the dishwasher to keeping the foyer clean. The idea is to provide healthy nutritional access for our students at a break. I am very excited to announce that BRPHS has been chosen to receive a $10,000 grant from The Mosaic Company to enhance the nutrition program at BRPHS.
Thank you to our community partners, Co-op and President’s Choice, the Saskatchewan School Boards Association and to The Mosaic Company for investing in the commitment to improve student nutrition and health by creating a healthier learning environment.
