The grade 6 students at Red Wing Public School ended the year of with an engaging and exciting social assessment. As part of a social and environmental sustainability plan the students needed to plan and organize either a social sustainability action plan or an environmental sustainability action plan. The social sustainability groups chose a local organization in need of assistance and planned a fundraiser on their behalf. The local organizations that were chosen were the SPCA, Ronald McDonald Room at the Victoria Hospital, and Kids Sports which was donated through Lakeland Ford. The SPCA group ran a candy guess where students could purchase entries for $1 or with the donation of an animal item that could be used at the SPCA. The Ronald McDonald Room fundraiser was a frozen treat sale where student could purchase a treat for $1 or with the donation of items that could be used at our local Ronald McDonald room. The Kids Sports group had a sport bucket fundraiser where students could get entries with a $1 donation or a donation of used sports equipment that would be donated to the Kids Sports Play It Forward campaign. The environmental groups had to create an engaging campaign to create awareness for the important of environmental stewardship in our community. One group did a Community Clean up Challenge where students were entered in a Red Wing Swag bag draw. The final group did a Garbage Scavenger Hunt to help promote community clean up, they had a draw for a summer time bucket full of summer essentials! The hands on learning experience was a favorite amongst the class. The grade 6 class would like to give a big thank you to all of the members within the school community that donated and helped out during these fundraisers.
