Division Hires New Superintendent

The Board’s Superintendent Selection Committee reported to the Board about their successful process that concluded with the hiring of Garette Tebay as the new Superintendent of Schools.  Garette is an Education graduate of the U of S and has earned a Master of Education (M. Ed) in 2008 and a Doctor of Education (Ed. D) in 2017.  She has been an educational leader for nearly 20 years, mostly in Fort MacMurray and Parkland School Divisions in Alberta.  The Board has high expectations for the work Garette will lead and for the expertise she will provide for the benefit of our students, staff and families.

SRPSD Partners with Dumont Technical Institute

The Board was pleased to finalize the partnership with Dumont Technical Institute (DTI) to provide additional support for students seeking Adult Basic Education ABE. Trustees acknowledged the needs of a number of 18–21-year-olds in our community whose life did not include success in high school and who are seeking to complete some essential education.  There was clear recognition of the inclusive and supportive environments in SRPSD schools that provide a range of programs, but the Board also acknowledged that some of these young adults find more success through an ABE program in an adult environment. DTI has a record of strong programming and support for these learners and SRPSD is pleased to work in partnership to support these students.

SRSC Reports on School-based Student Voice Initiative

On behalf of the Saskatchewan Rivers Students for Change (SRSC), Student Trustee Tia-Lee McCallum, outlined a number of activities occurring in SRPSD high schools. One activity that gained particular traction in at least two schools is the collection of and action on student voice.  Student voice is heard in SRPSD schools through the OurSchool Survey, regular interaction with staff and in other ways. However, some schools are adding a student voice suggestion box where student ideas for improvement are submitted and then reviewed by a group of students and staff to determine actions that can be taken.  The submission of ideas and the visible action in response to those suggestions not only improves the school environment but also empowers students and enhances their sense of contribution to their school community.  Trustees were impressed by this student-driven change.

The Board hopes this brief update can provide information and promote communication.  If you want further details about the Board and its meetings, you can find information at this link SRPSD Board Information or under the “About Us” tab at www.srsd119.ca.  You are also encouraged to contact your local trustee.

We look forward to the connection!
