1. Global Sport Academy Excels
At the recent Board meeting, Superintendent Cory Trann reported on the progress of the Global Sport Academy program, and the Board was pleased to see the outstanding success of the program. The staff, students, and families worked to overcome the challenges of COVID and ensure the continuation of high caliber learning and athletic achievement. The program expanded to include a Grade 7-8 Hockey Program for any SRPSD student in the city or surrounding area and those families spoke highly of the program. The Grade 9-12 Hockey Program continues to grow and the new Grade 9-12 Multi-Sport Athletic program has expended as well. Trustees were pleased to see how well the Global Sport Program brings to life the Learning and Innovation Priority of the SRPSD Strategic Plan.
2. Indigenous Language Programs Expand
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 12, 13 and 14 guides SRPSD in its work to promote Indigenous Languages and the support of partners and the community strengthens that work. Superintendent Jennifer Hingley reported the success of the Cree Language Program at John Diefenbaker and the plans to expand it to include grade 2 starting next fall. The Metis Nation-Saskatchewan continues to partner with SRPSD to sustain the Michif Language and Culture Programs in Kindergarten at Queen Mary and St. Louis. The excellent experiences for these students are created by the leadership of outstanding staff, the generous guidance of Elders and the support of parents and communities.
3. Elders Council Continues to Evolve
Just prior to the Regular meeting, the Board had another opportunity to seek conversation and guidance from the Elders and Knowledge Keeper on the Elders Council. There have been many powerful conversations over the last two years and the recent discussion continued with a focus on the Strategic Plan. The discussion centered on finding ways to provide a structure for the strategic work and ways to ensure experience and action follows those discussions. The Council commended the Board for the good work happening in the division, advocated for the Board to continue the work in progress and encouraged trustees to personally experience cultural events and to participate in ceremony whenever possible.
The Board hopes this brief update can provide information and promote communication. If you want further details about the Board and its meetings, you can find information at this link SRPSD Board Information or under the “About Us” tab at www.srsd119.ca. You are also encouraged to contact your local trustee.
We look forward to the connection!
