Dedicating Time is a simple arts-based professional development session that combines creativity, reflection, and mindfulness. Participants will experience a three-step process that can easily be adapted for classroom use.

Step 1: Visual Arts Activity

Participants will create a simple mixed-media canvas. Using white paint and one additional colour, they will paint a sky background and add a black power line or tree branch. Small stones will be used to create birds, which will later represent people or communities that have influenced and supported them.

Step 2: Sharing Circle (Sharing who their birds are dedicated to)

Once the artwork is complete, participants will take part in a sharing circle and reflect on the people, relationships, teachings, or communities represented by the birds on their canvas. This models a classroom strategy for building connection, gratitude, and belonging.

Step 3: Loving-Kindness Meditation

The session will conclude with a guided Loving-Kindness Meditation, where participants will extend wishes of health, happiness, peace, and well-being to themselves, their loved ones, and their communities.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Experience a simple visual arts project that encourages reflection and storytelling.
  • Learn how to facilitate a dedication and sharing-circle activity in the classroom.
  • Explore a mindfulness practice that promotes gratitude, compassion, and community connection.
