Wesmor Public High School decided to give back to their wonderful community, and what better way to do this than to help elderly people with their yard work? The tasks included raking leaves, pulling weeds, cutting grass, sidewalk edging, shrub pruning and garden prep for next season. Mr. Kalika reached out to Malcom Jenkins and Canadian Tire for assistance. Thank you, Mr. Jenkins, for generously donating a dozen rakes and gloves to this great community building event! Flyers were created and delivered door to door, and they were able to assist 2 people with their yard work. Not only was this a great way for students to meet their PE 20/30 Service Learning Outcome, but it also helped promote physical activity and the importance of creating a community spirit.

October 16 to 22, 2022 is Education Week in Saskatchewan, and the theme this year is Reaching for Tomorrow, Celebrating Today/Célébrons le present, Préparons l’avenir. Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division recognizes the work of our educational professionals and celebrates the learning achievements of our students. Our students’ success would not be possible without the contributions from all members of the education team, including teachers, educational associates, library staff, bus drivers, custodians, education professionals and administrative personnel. Thank you to all SRPSD staff for your commitment to building a brighter future.

This beautiful quilt panel was sewn by our Grade 1/2 Classroom teacher Mrs. Heather Hladun. We will be hanging this in foyer of our school. As we gathered for our Day of Truth and Reconciliation Assembly, Mrs. Hladun’s class walked through the halls carrying it for all to see. It is a true symbol of reconciliation as we move into the future with the Educational Calls to Action recommended from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The Quilt panel is called The Journey Home created by Karen Erickson

“In light of the recent traumatic events that have unfolded at former Residential Schools across Canada, Karen Erickson created “Every Child Matter” out of reverence to those grieving. This painting depicts two siblings who were finally set free after being grimly discovered at a Residential School. The children who are shown holding hands were torn apart from each other, but now reunited as they make their way back home. Karen included beautiful imagery such as a moon and feathers to represent the First Nations, Inuit and Metis people joining together to guide the two siblings.” 100% of the net proceeds from the sales of this quilt panel will be donated to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society and the Orange Shirt Society.

Community Honour Walk Queen Mary Public School

On September 30^th as our country observed its first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, so did we at Queen Mary with a Community Honour Walk. Staff and students took part in lessons and activities throughout the week leading up to our walk, to learn about residential schools and the importance of sharing our past and learning our history, in order to move forward and heal.

One of the activities that students participated in was called Rocks of Remembrance, where students collected rocks and painted them orange, and then on our Community Honour Walk gently placed these rocks around our school community. These rocks represent beacons of hope and remembrance in honour of those who never made it home, and those who have survived residential schools.

Thank you to Superintendent Hingley, Constable Derek Simonson, and Ward 1 City Councillor Charlene Miller for joining us on this important journey!

National Indigenous Peoples Day

Indigenous peoples have made invaluable contributions to this country and continue to play a strong role in shaping our present and our future. We recognize and honour the strength and resilience of Indigenous peoples as we work together towards reconciliation.

First Nations, Métis and Inuit people have a unique heritage and bring diverse cultures that strengthen our world. National Indigenous Peoples Day is a great opportunity to celebrate and learn about Indigenous cultures, and is a good time to reflect and plan for how each of us will contribute to reconciliation over the next year. Please join the celebrations around the community!
