Inclusion in the general education setting of the neighborhood school is the primary goal for all students in the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (SRPSD).
However, SRPSD has specialized learning centres for Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8 students in the city of Prince Albert as part of its continuum of educational programming for students with complex and intensive needs. These learning centres are a resource management strategy that allows SRPSD to more efficiently provide specialized and intensive supports for a greater number of students with intensive needs in an urban setting.
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education curriculum states the Broad Areas of Learning for all Kindergarten to Grade 12 students. They include:
- Sense of Self, Community, and Place
- Lifelong Learners
- Engaged Citizens
These areas serve as a foundation for the development of an individual plan to meet the diverse needs of students. Families are an integral part of the division based team when developing and implementing a student’s individualized plan. Professionals from outside agencies are also a valuable resource in supporting students success. Student’s program placement is reviewed on an ongoing basis.
The school based team includes School Administrators, Classroom Teachers, and Educational Associates. School based teams and students are supported by professionals from the SRPSD Intensive Supports Team. These professionals include Speech and Language Pathologists, Registered Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapist, School Social Workers and Student Support Services Consultants.
The goal of the Specialized Learning Centres is to prepare students to participate in an inclusive community at school, at home and in society.
SRPSD currently has three Specialized Learning Centres for elementary-aged students:
English as an Additional Language
- For students from grades 1 to 8 who arrive with little to no English Language abilities (Common Framework of Reference levels in the A1 range)
- The CFR Level 2 Student Profile can be a reference to assist in determining a new student’s placement.

- Individualize, accelerated English language acquisition programming
- Inclusion in mainstream classes
- Students transferred to attendance area school once language skills allow for success in mainstream classrooms
- maximum placement for a student is one (1) academic school year before the transition to their attendance area school.
- The EAL Specialized Learning Centre is located at Ecole Vickers Public School
Developmental Education
- Developmental Education offers educational programming to students with multiple disabilities in a specialized learning centre offering intensive supports.
- Families are invited to participate in the development of a Inclusion and Intervention Plan with the teacher to meet the student’s unique learning needs.
- Developmental Education is located at Ecole Vickers Public School (Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8).
- Students may be referred between the ages of 3 and 13 years old.
The SRPSD Intensive Supports Team, in collaboration with the neighborhood school team and the student’s family, will determine the best placement option for a student.
